Black men run a much higher risk of illness and death compared to the rest of the US population. In many cases black men are 2 to 10 times as likely to fall victim to the same diseases that afflict their white counterparts. The five leading causes of death of Black men under 65 in 2003 were: Heart Disease (19 percent), Malignant Neoplasm (18 percent), HIV Disease (14 percent), Homicide (8 percent) and Psychoactive Substances (5 percent). The mean age of death of Black males was 61, lower than any group except Hispanic males, and 10 years lower than the mean age of 71 for New York City. The mean age of death for white men was 72. Black males had the highest death rates in the city in 2003, 11.9 per 1,000 Black men, compared to 7.8 for the city and 8.9 for white males. The CDC lists the 10 killers of African American men as heart disease (24%) cancer, (21.9%), injury, violence and safety (6.5%), homicide (5.2%), stroke (5.0%), diabetes (3.9%), HIV/AIDS (3.0%), chronic bronchitis, emphysema (2.8%), kidney disease (2.6%) and conditions perinatal/newborn (1.9%). This conference focuses on providing participants with the keys to better health and longevity by offering alternative approaches and strategies to quality health. The Opening Plenary addresses the health crisis faced by many black men and offers recommendations on how to address the health disparity and meet the needs of Black men.

In a 1995 survey, 90% of the men questioned didn't even know where the prostate is located. Recent studies have portrayed the Black man as rapidly becoming an endangered species. While the number of deaths from heart disease and malignant neoplasm’s are consistent with other groups, Black males had the highest proportion of deaths from HIV disease and homicides. They were one-third of all of the persons under 65 who died from HIV disease and nearly half (48 percent) of all of the homicide deaths. Black males had the largest share of any group living with HIV/AIDS in 2002. He has served as Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and as Director of their Acupuncture Unit, specializing in substance abuse treatment, over a 16-year period. He is also the former Medical Director of the Respite Foundation, a nonprofit organization focusing on complementary and alternative medicine and its applications. A former chairman of the board of the nonprofit Ifetayo Cultural Arts Facility, Dr. Kokayi produced large-scale health fairs in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, and implemented health awareness seminars to meet the growing need for preventive health awareness and practices. He subsequently invited 70 colleagues to share their expertise in a hugely successful holistic health fair he sponsored in conjunction with Baruch College (CUNY) in 2005.
